How to Set Up Fishing Poles in just 7 Easy Steps

1

Check Quality of Fishing Equipment

Before even starting to set up your fishing pole, you must first ensure that the fishing gears and equipment you have are in good shape, free from scratches, tears and any kind of damage.

You can do this by making sure that the items you purchase are of high quality, made of strong materials for durability.

This can help your fishing pole withstand any wear and tear and even last longer in your every fishing trip.

2

Start Assembling the Fishing Pole

The first thing to do is to start assembling your fishing pole. You might get a rod that breaks apart by two and the joint where the section fits together are called the ferrules.

There are two of them namely the male ferrule and the female. The male ferrule is the top section while the female ferrule is the bottom section.

Carefully assemble the ferrules in a flat surface and slowly insert the male ferrule securely into the female and make sure that they are aligned perfectly.

If your rod is not perfectly aligned and coming together, you should stop immediately. Read again and look at the instructions.

Maybe there’s a locking mechanism of any sort you’ve missed to take account. Don’t force the rod together if it won’t, or else you risk damaging it permanently.

3

Attach the Reel

The bottom section of the rod has an opening for the reel to be set in. You must first loosen the reel seat on your fishing rod, big enough for your reel foot to fit in.

Once it’s set, slowly tighten the reel seat. One thing to remember is not to tighten the reel too much when attaching. It may damage the reel in the process.

4

Spooling the Reel

  • First you must open the bail arm.
  • Slowly place the fishing line around the reel and tie a knot. The arbor knot is the appropriate knot for this job as it secures your line to the reel.
  • Carefully tighten it to the reel and clip tag ends if necessary.
  • Then close back the bail.
  • After that you should tightly hold your fishing line a foot away from the reel to prevent it from being tangled.
  • Lastly, turn the reel until the desired amount of line is on the reel. Watch out for Line Capacity, some reels have them, telling you the maximum amount of line for the reel.

Remember that threading the reel to the right can tighten it and threading it to the left can also loosen it.

5

String in the Rod

First grab the tip of your line with one hand and then open the bail arm with your other hand. Then slowly thread the line through the rod guides.

After successfully treading the line. You lock the thread with the locking mechanism located on the reel.

6

Choose a Bait or Lure

There are plenty of baits or lures to choose from depending on where you’re fishing and what kind of fish you’re catching and type of fishing activity you’ll get into.

Color of the lure may vary depending on water clarity and weather. It has been a general rule of thumb to anglers that lighter colored lures work best in clear water and bright days.

Meanwhile, fluorescent covered and dark colored lures are favored in stained or murky waters and cloudy days.

7

Attaching the Bait

After choosing what bait you want. Attach it by using a knot.

The best knot to use for lures is the rapala knot for it creates a non-slip loop at the end of the line, allowing lure to move freely and naturally.
